About the Artwork
The Thorned Boy explores the fragile space between beauty and suffering, desire and devotion. The crown of thorns is removed from its traditional narrative and placed upon a contemporary male figure, transforming a familiar symbol of martyrdom into something more intimate and ambiguous.
The thorns may wound, protect, distinguish, or even adorn him. They become part of the figure’s identity — a sign of vulnerability, but also of transformation and self-possession.
By bringing sacred symbolism into contact with sensual male beauty, the painting reflects on the ways bodies are desired, judged, idealized, and made symbolic. Rather than presenting the figure as a martyr in the traditional sense, The Thorned Boy leaves his role unresolved: wounded and crowned at the same time.
