About the Artwork

“Boys” is my tribute to the revolutionary visual language of Cubism, inspired deeply by the groundbreaking work of Pablo Picasso, yet firmly anchored within the contemporary discourse of queer art. Through geometric forms and fragmented composition, the painting explores the complexities of gay identity in a society still constrained by prejudice and rigid stereotypes.

The characters depicted have faces resembling masks—an intentional metaphor for the protective facades queer individuals often adopt to navigate a hostile social environment. These masks, sharply delineated and solemn, embody the emotional armor worn by many LGBTQ+ individuals to guard their true selves from misunderstanding, judgment, and potential harm. Beneath these masks lies vulnerability, desire, and the authentic self yearning for visibility and acceptance.

With earthy tones and bold, dynamic brushstrokes, “Boys” challenges the viewer to confront both the tension and harmony between hidden identities and outward appearances. It raises questions about the performative nature of masculinity and the strength required to maintain one’s authenticity against societal pressures.

This piece seeks not only to honor the legacy of Cubism but also to enrich the ongoing conversation about the intersection of art, sexuality, and self-expression, advocating for a future where masks are no longer needed and genuine identities can thrive openly and proudly.
